1 – Via Crusis – Cebu City

This is a Lenten activitywhere devotees from the city and neighboring suburbs and towns perform penitential procession all throughout the city. It ends with the Station of the Cross located on 12 hectares of rolling hills. Life-size statues of the 14 Stations of the Cross were patterned after the Way of the Cross in Lourdes, France.

This festival is one of the major celebrations in the Philippines. Local visitors and tourists gawk and marvel at the colorfully garbed and masked as local actors dressed as Roman soldiers and centurions reenact the life of Longinus, the soldier who speared the side of Jesus Christ during the Crucifixion. A story of faith , it narrates his death by beheading. The entire towns of Boac, Morpog and Gasan are virtually converted into huge stages as the story as Longinus unfolds.

Good Friday – Turumba – Pakil, Laguna

While devotees go around singing and dancing to the Turumba, they venerate and carry the centuries-old image of the Virgin Mary.

Good Friday – Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras – Jordan, Guimaras

This reminds you of the passion play in Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany. The Lenten presentation is held on the hillside of Jordan with locals as actors. The presentation has been attracting hundreds of foreign and domestic tourists. Prior to the presentation, devotees trek to “Balaan Bukid” or Holy Mountain to do homage to a huge cross planted by the chapel overlooking Guimaras Strait and Iloilo City.

This annual festival commemorates the founding of Lamitan Municipality. It is an awesome way to showcase of their traditional Yakan customs and traditions, music and dances, and traditional crafts.

 

Second week of April – Manaoag Pilgrimage – Pangasinan

This is a yearly pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag. Local pilgrims and tourists honor the Virgin’s image for its many miracles.Vehicles of pilgrims are blessed every Saturday.
